Maps & Plans

The National Library also houses a small collection of maps and plans ranging from the 16th to the 20th century. There are three types of topographical maps: district maps representing various parts of Italy, plans and bird's-eye-view of towns, and local maps and plans of very small areas in different stages of detail. Most local maps depict fortifications and roads in Malta and Gozo. The 16th century plans are manuscript and executed in watercolour. Many 19th century plans show excavations of the megalithic remains at Hagar Qim. Other holdings include 19th century and 20th century survey maps by British draughtsmen who accompanied the maps with very elaborate descriptions of the lands.
